About this Event
15 Gilmer St SE, Atlanta GA, 30303
https://artdesign.gsu.edu/vas/David Altmejd’s work is a unique and heady mix of science and magic, science fiction and gothic romanticism: a post-apocalyptic vision which is at the same time essentially optimistic, containing as it always does the potential for regeneration, evolution and invention.
David Altmejd was born in Montreal in 1974 and lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the University of Québec in Montréal and graduated with an MFA from Columbia University, New York in 2001. His numerous international exhibitions include a major survey exhibition ‘Flux’, which travelled from Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris to MUDAM in Luxembourg and the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal (2014–15). In 2007, he represented Canada at the 52nd Venice Biennale with his installation The Index, and has also been included in the 13th Kaunas Biennial, Lithuania (2021); the Liverpool Biennial, UK (2008); the Whitney Biennial, New York (2004) and the 8th Istanbul Biennial (2003).
ABOUT THE WELCH VISITING ARTISTS & SCHOLAR LECTURE SERIES
This year-round calendar of art lectures provides students with intellectual access to a diverse group of acclaimed artists, art historians, art educators, curators, and scholars. Our guests conduct on-campus talks about their art, research, and careers, adding to the pedagogical discourse of contemporary art in the classroom and studio. All VAS events are free and open to the public, an important educational program for the regional art scene.
All 2025-2026 VAS lectures will take place within walking distance of our Arts & Humanities main building (10 Peachtree Center Ave SE), at Kopleff Recital Hall (15 Gilmer St SE) and Student Center East (55 Gilmer St).
Please provide ample travel time, as there are street closures and construction by the venue. There is City of Atlanta Park Mobile street parking available on Edgewood, Auburn, Courtland, and other adjacent streets.
Georgia State parking decks are also open to visitors for a $10 fee. T Deck (43 Auburn Ave NE) is the closest GSU deck to Kopleff and M Deck is the closest GSU deck to the Student Center East, but more visitor parking information can be found at parking.gsu.edu.
For those who prefer mass transit, our campus is directly between two MARTA stops, Five Points and Peachtree Center.
