What is TILT?

Transparent teaching methods help students understand how and why they are learning course content in particular ways. A transparent assignment has 1) a clearly defined purpose, 2) describes thoroughly the tasks students will need to perform, and 3) explains the criteria for success in detail.

Why should I TILT my assignments?

Studies have shown that transparently designed assignments can foster increased student learning and engagement, leading to improved student outcomes—such as academic confidence, sense of belonging, employer-valued skills, GPA, and retention.*

TILT as an assignment design intervention has produced promising results, especially in lower-level and gateway courses. These findings indicate all students benefited from TILTed assignments, but, in particular, first-generation students, students from low-income households, and non-White students showed greater benefits.

We will offer participants techniques for applying evidence-based practices that create clearer assignments, regardless of instructional modality.
