The facts are clear: Germany’s far-right movement has made substantial political gains. In 2017, the far-right Alternative for Germany Party (AfD) went from zero to 94 seats in the Bundestag, the German Parliament. In May the AfD increased from 7 to 11 seats in the European Parliament. When paired with the imminent departure of Chancellor Angela Merkel, a moderate, these developments represent a shift in German politics.

Germany is the leader in European integration, promoting human rights, multilateralism and fiscal responsibility in the Eurozone countries. However, far-right populists envision a very different Germany, both at home and abroad. What would this mean for U.S.-German relations?
