After the successful D-Day landing in France in June 1944, The Allies moves east to the forests of the Ardennes in Belgium and Luxembourg. In response, Hitler, launched a surprise attack on December 16. His goal was to break through the Allied front, seize control of Antwerp, divide the Allied forces, and sue for peace. When the Germans surrounded the Allied soldiers at Bastogne it caused a “bulge” into the Allied front lines, giving the battle its name. The battle lasted five weeks and would become a major turning point during WWII.
