Description
Netflix’s new documentary “Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food” shares the shocking truth about the food system in the United States: foodborne illness is a big problem. Salmonella on peanuts, raw chicken and eggs, E. coli on leafy greens and beef… contaminated food causes 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths each year in the United States. Education of consumers on safe food preparation and industry mechanisms for self-inspection only go so far. Rather, a myriad of federal agencies, including FDA, USDA, CDC, and others, have responsibility for oversight of different pieces of the food system. After screening the film, expert and film consultant Georgia State Law Professor Timothy Lytton will discuss how the complex regulatory framework in the U.S. creates challenges for protecting the food supply and preventing foodborne illness outbreaks.
