DESCRIPTION:Title: Factors Associated With Serious Adverse Events and Misus
e of Glp-1 Receptor Agonists \n\nChair: Dr. Alexander Kirpich \n\nAbstract
: This study investigates the factors associated with the serious adverse
event (SAE) outcomes and misuse of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1RAs)\, a
prominent medication for type-2 diabetes and obesity\, using data from the
FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) from 2005 to 2023. With projec
ted increases in GLP-1RA use by 2025 and growing concerns about misuse and
counterfeit products\, more research is needed to understand these risk f
actors. Using multinomial logistic regression for SAE outcomes and logisti
c regression for misuse on a sample of 20\,704 reports\, the study found t
hat each additional year in age decreased the odds of non-fatal SAEs\, fem
ales had lower odds of fatal SAEs\, and Semaglutide was associated with hi
gher odds of death/life-threatening outcomes. Misuse was linked to higher
odds of hospitalization\, with reports submitted by female consumers had i
ncreasing misuse odds\, while older age reduced these odds. Thus\, these f
indings highlight a need for age- and gender-specific risk assessment in G
LP-1RA therapy. While the study's strengths include its relatively large s
ample size and statistical approaches\, limitations such as potential repo
rting bias could warrant further research using more comprehensive data so
urces. The increasing utilization of GLP-1RAs and associated SAEs necessit
ate attention from public health agencies\, particularly given the ongoing
development of more convenient administration methods.
