About this Event
Instead of taking the holiday off, participate in GSU's MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 20, 2024! The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is GSU's largest annual volunteer event that brings students together to do community service!
GSU is proud to honor Dr. King's enduring vision by launching our Day of Service with a Unity Walk from Georgia State University to the King Center. * This meaningful journey takes us down historic Auburn Avenue, a cornerstone of Black Atlanta's rich history. In the 1920s, Auburn Avenue flourished as the commercial hub for Black Atlanta. Beyond its economic significance, Auburn Avenue is celebrated worldwide as a vibrant center of Black enterprise and a cradle of the civil rights movement. It was here, on Auburn Avenue, that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born and began his journey as a preacher, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire. Today, the avenue proudly hosts The King Center, founded by Coretta Scott King, as a living testament to their shared dream of justice, equality, and community.
Our volunteer projects will begin at the conclusion of our walk. This year's volunteer opportunities take place at a variety of sites nearby: The King Center (packaging hygiene kits), Big Bethel Church (painting/refurbishing their school), and Heartis Senior Living (hosting BINGO and other activities for seniors). Our on-campus project will take place in the SCE ballroom, where we will be using recycled material to make mats for SafeHouse Outreach.
We hope you join us as we walk and serve together in unity, celebrating our shared history and commitment to building a brighter future.
