About this Event
Students will gain hands-on experience learning traditional, environmentally friendly techniques for creating a full range of colorful dyes from natural materials. Workshops in utilizing indigo, cochineal, wild chamomile, and other locally sourced materials will be facilitated by a guest lecturer who is a member of the indigenous weaving community of Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico. Students will learn the history of weaving and dyeing among the Zapotec in the period of Spanish colonialism and how their artistry has evolved and adapted to the contemporary global economy.
Students will experience the entire process of natural dyeing as practiced by artisans in the village by engaging in hands on experimentation.
