Scanned and untagged PDFs can create major access barriers for students in your course! This workshop introduces how to identify unreadable PDF materials and explains strategies for locating replacements—or when to recreate a PDF accessibly. You’ll learn why scanned documents violate online standards and discover practical methods for creating inclusive course content. Faculty will leave with tools, examples, and next steps for aligning their materials with ADA Title 2 and WCAG guidelines.

Topics covered include:

  • Why scanned PDFs are hard to read and incompatible with screen readers
  • PDF accessibility standards and how to check for compliance using Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Alternatives to scanned PDFs, including Library links, web or eBook versions, and OER
  • How to recreate PDFs using accessible Word and PowerPoint files
  • Steps to convert documents into accessible PDFs

To get the most out of this workshop we recommend having a PDF you’d like to review. It can also help to have Adobe Acrobat Pro installed on your device.
