Content language is not everything you need when you are teaching a class. There is also functional language, which applies to teaching contexts regardless of your field. Functional language is the language that is needed to communicate effectively in different settings such as classrooms. This workshop focuses on functional language in classroom discourse. We will discuss what functional language is and go into the details of the main functions of language in lectures. Through the discussions and activities, you will develop a better understanding of what functional language is and take away practical tips that you can use in your teaching.
