Behind the Music: Hip Hop and Social Justice- Panels
Day 1: July, 10, 2017
Hip-Hop and Education/Academia- This panel examines the ways that rap music and Hip-Hop culture are infused in the public educational system as a means of non-traditional, innovative methods of education. This panel will also address the creation of Hip-Hop courses and scholarships at several prominent universities such as the Nasir Jones (New York rapper Nas) Hip-Hop Fellowship that is established at Harvard University; the Cornell University Hip-Hop Collection and the increasing popularity of rap artists as adjunct lectures as seen by the hiring of southern rap artist Bun B at Rice University.
Politics and Atlanta Rap- This panel will examine the rise and importance of Atlanta rap as well as the political and social issues that have been addressed within the music.
Day 2: July, 11, 2017
Hip-Hop and Social Justice Issues/Politics- This panel will feature a discussion on the relationship between rap music, rap artists and politics. Specifically, the panelists will discuss who ran for political positions such as Wyclef Jean, Luke Skywalker, and Rhymesfest and Hip-Hop’s endorsement of political candidates. There will be numerous discussions of Hip-Hop’s relationship with the election and support of president Barack Obama, one of the first presidential candidates to openly embrace rap music, the campaigning on behalf of other candidates i.e. Bernie Sanders, and the discussion of Trump within Hip Hop.
Hip Hop’s Political and Social Voice
This address will feature two Hip Hop artists (rappers) who have consistently been involved in the fight and discussion of issues of the criminal Justice system, including fair sentencing guidelines, rehabilitation, the death penalty, the war on drugs, the prison industry and the recommendations for participation and activism.
