Generative AI can be a powerful tool to support students as they work through various stages of scientific inquiry. Generative AI platforms also offer the kinds of instructional supports that could enable instructors to infuse more high-impact practices such as project-based work and undergraduate student research in large classes across all disciplines. In this overview, we'll share our early approaches to infusing generative AI into a PERS 2003 collaborative research project, including lessons learned. We'll also offer more general suggestions regarding how to help students complete tasks like these:
Moving from observations to research questions to hypotheses
Reviewing background research
Choosing the kinds and sources of data appropriate to a study
Collecting and analyzing data
Drawing conclusions and presenting data
Asking new questions based on findings
Participants will leave our conversation able to:
Identify generative AI platforms capable of supporting student inquiry
Assess the pros, cons, limits, and potential of using generative AI to support project-based learning and undergraduate research in their courses
