As an instructor in the college classroom, you’ve likely seen students using AI—perhaps even felt its increasing (invited or not) presence in the writing space. Wait and see? Hold it back? Or find ways to integrate it thoughtfully? Just as we have adapted to previous communication technologies—personal computers, the internet, and web and social media—AI is now shaping how we communicate and write. The question is: what’s the next step?

In this session, we will explore how to cultivate students’ AI literacy—the ability to write and communicate effectively in an AI-augmented communication place. Rather than seeing AI as a shortcut that compromises learning, we’ll discuss how to incorporate it ethically as a tool to bolster critical thinking, creativity, engagement, and self-efficacy in the writing classroom. We will delve into both the theoretical and practical aspects of AI integration, focusing on writing pedagogy and classroom practices. We will discuss effective ways of designing assignments and activities that harness AI to enhance—not replace—learning outcomes. Together, we’ll discuss creative strategies to ensure AI serves as a meaningful learning aid and tool, rather than a crutch.

Join us for this interactive workshop to reimagine AI’s role in writing education and walk away with actionable strategies for your classroom.
