In this talk, Sarah O’Brien shares her journey from an undergraduate computer science student at Georgia State University to a data scientist at Southern Company and a graduate student in Georgia Tech’s Master of Science in Analytics program. She explores how values, curiosity, and community can guide early-career decisions, especially when uncertainty feels overwhelming. Sarah will discuss how to build habits that compound over time, how to think about responsible AI from day one, and how to choose opportunities that align with who you are rather than who you think you are “supposed” to be. This session includes a quick beginner-friendly data storytelling challenge to show how ethical thinking and human-centered problem-solving can shape your impact and opportunity in technology. Students will leave with practical strategies, honest insights, and the confidence to build a career that reflects their values.

About the Speaker: Sarah O’Brien is a Data Scientist at Southern Company and a graduate student in the Master of Science in Analytics program at Georgia Tech. She is a proud Georgia State University alum whose undergraduate experience was shaped by leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to expanding access to computing. During her time at GSU, she was actively involved in student organizations and initiatives that supported women and underrepresented groups in tech. Today, her work sits at the intersection of analytics, responsible AI, and human-centered problem solving, with a focus on building systems that serve diverse communities. She continues to champion inclusive pathways into tech through mentorship, data and AI literacy efforts, and leadership roles in professional organizations. Her work reflects a commitment to using technology as a pathway for empowerment, impact, and opportunity.
