Over the past two years, the Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora (CSAD) has established a tradition of hosting an annual, virtual Black History Month Read-a-Thon, celebrating literature from Africa and the African diaspora.
This virtual event has gained international partnerships, including with the U.S. Embassy in Banjul, The Gambia; the Johannes Gutenberg University Obama Institute in Mainz, Germany; Centro de Estudios Afrodiaspóricos (CEAF) at Universidad Icesi in Cali, Colombia; and the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. CSAD continues to expand our global partnerships. This year, Ghana, Ethiopia, Canada, and Brazil will be among our international partners.
Most notably, CSAD is also partnering with Georgia Public Television (GPB). The first two hours of the Read-a-Thon will stream live from the GPB studios in Atlanta, with plans for parts of the Read-a-Thon to air on GPB at a later date. The CSAD Global Read-a-Thon theme for 2025 is “Roots: The Journey of Us.” This theme aligns with GPB’s own theme focused on “The Great Migration.”
The CSAD REad-a-Thon will highlight narratives about the journeys across Africa and the African diaspora. This includes journeys such as the transatlantic passage from West Africa to the Americas, the Great Migration from the American South to the North, and diverse migrant experiences spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, and beyond.
As the Read-a-Thon streams live GPB will engage in numerous community events that reflect the migration of people and cultures across the Black diaspora
